CHAPTER 9 God's Covenant with Noah

1 And God blessed Noah, and his sons, and said to them, Grow and multiply, and fill the earth, and dominate it! 2 And the fear of you and trembling will be upon all the wild beasts of the earth, upon all the winged creatures of the heaven, and upon all the things moving upon the earth, and upon all the fishes of the sea. Under your hands I have given them to you. 3 And every reptile which is living shall be to you for food; as [³vegetation ⁴of grass ¹I have given ⁵to you ²all]. 4 Except [³meat ⁴with ⁵the blood ⁶of life ¹you shall not ²eat]. 5 For even your blood -- of the blood of your lives at the hand of all the wild beasts I shall require it, and from the hand of a man's brother I shall require it. 6 The one shedding blood of a man, in return his blood shall be shed; for in the image of God I made the man. 7 But you grow, and multiply, and fill the earth, and multiply upon the earth! 8 And God said to Noah, and to his sons, saying, 9 Behold, I raise up my covenant to you, and to your seed after you, 10 and every [²soul ¹living] after you, from fowls and from cattle, and with all the wild beasts of the earth, as many as are with you, from all the ones coming forth from out of the ark. 11 And I will establish my covenant with you, and [³will not ⁴die ¹all ²flesh] any longer from the water of the flood; and there shall not be any longer a flood of water to lay waste all the earth. 12 And God said to Noah, This is the sign of the covenant which I execute between me and you, and between every [²soul ¹living], as many as are with you for [²generations ¹eternal]. 13 [²my bow ¹I put] in the cloud, and it will be for a sign of covenant between me and the earth. 14 And it will be in my collecting together the clouds upon the earth, [³will be seen ¹the ²bow] in the cloud. 15 And I will remember my covenant which is between me and you, and between every [²soul ¹living] among all flesh. And there will not be any longer the water for a flood so as to wipe away all flesh. 16 And [²will be ¹my bow] in the cloud; and I will see it to remember [²covenant ¹the eternal] between me and the earth, and between [²soul ¹the living] which is in all flesh upon the earth. 17 And God said to Noah, This is the sign of the covenant of which I ordained between me and between all flesh which is upon the earth.

Shem, Ham and Japheth

18 And these were the sons of Noah, the ones coming forth from the ark, Shem, Ham, Japheth. And Ham was father of Canaan. 19 These three are the sons of Noah. From these, men were disseminated upon all the earth. 20 And [³began ¹Noah ²the man] to be a farmer of the land. And he planted a vineyard, 21 and drank from the wine, and became intoxicated, and became naked in his house. 22 And [⁵looked at ¹Ham ²the ³father ⁴of Canaan] the nakedness of his father; and going forth, he announced it [²two ³brothers ¹to his] outside. 23 And [⁴taking ¹Shem ²and ³Japheth] the cloak, placed it upon [²two ³backs ¹their], and went backwards, and they covered up the nakedness of their father; and their face was backwards, and [³the ⁴nakedness ⁵of their father ¹they did not ²look at]. 24 [³sobered up ¹And ²Noah] from the wine, and knew as much as [⁴did ⁵to him ³son ¹his ²younger]. 25 And he said, Accursed be Canaan -- a child, [²a domestic servant ¹he will be] to his brothers. 26 And he said, Blessed be the lord God of Shem, and Canaan will be [³servant ²domestic ¹his]. 27 May God widen to Japheth, and let him dwell in the tents of Shem, and let Canaan become their servant. 28 [³lived ¹And ²Noah] after the flood three hundred fifty years. 29 And [⁵were ¹all ²the ³days ⁴of Noah] nine hundred fifty years, and he died.
